Performance Lab Sleep is a sleep supplement from Performance Lab. It currently retails at £29.00 a bottle, and I’ve had the pleasure to both try and review it over the last few months.
Before anyone asks “Yes, it contains melatonin.” That seems to be the main appeal of these natural sleep aids – well, it certainly is for me.
In this article, you’ll be able to read my full Performance Lab Sleep review, along with what benefits and experiences I had while using it.
Not only that, we’ll be covering all the other information you need to know about this sleep supplement too, such as the ingredients, how they work and other related questions to this sleep aid.

Performance Lab Sleep Benefits
Performance Lab Sleep is a sleep supplement which is all natural and claimed to help you fall asleep faster and more effectively.
Performance Lab claim their supplement can:
- Supply Melatonin to encourage drowsiness.
- Speed up sleep onset.
- Reduces limb movements and twitches overnight, for a better undisturbed sleep.
- Relaxes muscles and nerves for a more peaceful night.
- Safe and non-habit forming with all natural melatonin.
But how well does it really work? In this review, I look closer at Performance Lab Sleep to get the real story, and to see if it is worth the money.
Here’s what I’ve found…
Performance Lab Sleep Ingredients
- Magnesium+ (as Magnesium Bisglycinate, Magnesium Taurate, NutriGenesis Magnesium) – 100 mg
- CherryPURE (Whole Montmorency Tart Cherry) – 500 mg
- TryptoPure L-Tryptophan – 250 mg
That’s it – and to be honest, if you’re looking for a natural sleep aid, that’s all you’ll need.
Things we liked right away with these ingredients:
- All dosages are displayed clearly, nothing is hidden.
- No synthetic melatonin
- Everything is natural
- Good options in generous dosages
Below, we’ll go deeper into the ingredients in Performance Lab Sleep, in terms of what they do and how they can help you.
One of the more interesting aspects of this sleep supplement are the ‘branded’ ingredients (e.g. Magnesium+, CherryPURE, TyptoPure). We’ll go into more detail on those two and why they give this sleep aid the edge over other sleep supplements I’ve tried in the past.
Magnesium+ (Magnesium Bisglycinate, Magnesium Taurate, NutriGenesis Magnesium)
Magnesium matters a lot when it comes to sleep. It has a lot of general health benefits too, but that’s not what I’m going to talk about in this review.
Here’s how this magnesium supports sleep in this supplement, in a nutshell:
It relaxes your body, and drops your blood pressure.
Let me explain. Performance Lab Sleep supplement’s magnesium can help calm impulses across your nervous system, muscles and neuromuscular junctions. By doing this, it helps to relax your body which can help to fight and reduce twitching in your sleep.
By reducing limb movements in your sleep – you can greatly reduce the amount of times you wake up during the night and improve your overall sleep quality.
So, what about your blood pressure? Magnesium can help to relax vascular muscle cells in your body which can help start a blood pressure drop. A drop in pressure is natural when you fall asleep – taking this step with magnesium can help to speed up the process and get you into a sound sleep much faster.
Fast Facts about Magnesium:
- 60% of adults fail to get enough magnesium from their regular diet. Magnesium deficiency is more common than you may think.
- Synthetic magnesium in cheaper supplements is typically harder to absorb and you may only get benefits from 30% – 40% of the contents.
Why Magnesium+?
By Magnesium+, Performance Lab mean the magnesium was made via their NutriGenesis patented process, which is claimed give the mineral the same quality and effects that it would do in a natural environment.
A summarised version of this process is that a mineral salt is put in a glycoprotein matrix which then has a growth culture added to it – like yogurt cultures, and yeast cultures.
The cultures then absorb the mineral salts and which are then harvested when they reach maturity. They’re then cleaned, purified and spray dried.
It’s a lengthy process and quite complex, I’ve learned what I can from their page on it here (https://www.performancelab.com/pages/nutrigenesis) – if you want to learn more about it, I suggest you check out that link.
CherryPURE Montmorency Tart Cherry
In my mind, this is the best ingredient in Performance Lab Sleep. Unlike other sleep supplement’s I’ve tried in the past, Performance Lab Sleep does not contain synthetic melatonin, it has the real thing.
Again, here’s why we like Montmorency Tart Cherry in a nutshell:
Natural melatonin.
This fruit contains a natural source of the sleep hormone melatonin, and in an effective enough dose to give you a long, effective restful sleep.
Let me repeat, it’s an effective dose – not a huge dose. I’ve noticed if you go overboard on melatonin the tendency is that you get a serious groggy feeling the next morning. The tart cherry is just right in Performance Lab Sleep.
It can help promote sedating effects, and optimize your levels of the sleep hormone for a great night’s sleep. The end result is that this can help towards cultivating a more healthy circadian rhythm which gives you much better sleep patterns over time.
Fast Fact about Tart Cherry:
This fruit contains anthocyanin antioxidants which can help to reduce soreness in muscles and joints – which could also help with recovery after a hard day.
Why CherryPURE?
Montmorency Tart Cherry in this dosage is usually not enough to give you a big enough supply of natural melatonin to help you drift off asleep.
That’s why they’re using CherryPURE. Which is a very concentrated version of standard the tart cherry. It’s actually 50 times (50:1) more potent than normal Montmorency Tart Cherries.
The result is that taking a 500 mg dosage of CherryPURE gives you the effect of eating 25 g Montmorency Tart Cherries.
You get a lot more of the supplement benefits – without the calories.
TryptoPure L-Tryptophan
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that is effective for supporting a good night’s sleep. There’s a good amount in here for effective sleep benefits.
In a nutshell, here’s how the L-Tryptophan amino acid helps sleep:
Mood and Melatonin.
Let’s explain, after you consume L-Tryptophan, it’s absorbed by your brain and converted into 5-HTP. This is again converted into serotonin. Serotonin is your body’s feel-good hormone which can help your mood, as well as your relaxation and overall sleep.
What makes it even more effective is the serotonin is then converted again in the GI tract in your system into melatonin. This helps to optimize how your body’s pineal gland also produces melatonin.
Combined with the other ingredients in this sleep supplement, your getting more melatonin in your system both by what your body produces and from the ingredients in this supplement.
It really goes a long way in improving your overall sleeping patterns and making it easier for falling asleep.
Why TryptoPure?
Again, Performance Lab love going the extra mile for their ingredients. TyrptoPure is arguably the cleanest form of L-Tryptophan available.
Tryptopure is taken from non-GMO, gluten-free vegetables using patented “Ferment-A-Pure” technology – this even means it’s more eco-friendly too.
It is small touches like this in Performance Lab Sleep that makes it stand out from the competition and may even make it safer to use than regular L-Tryptophan you see on the market.
L-Tryptophan + Magnesium = Better Sleep
One of the things that I would like to mention as well is the relationship between some of the ingredients in Performance Lab Sleep. Namely, the magnesium and L-Trytophan.
Magnesium is actually a supporting cofactor in L-Tryptophan’s conversion into serotonin. As we know, by increasing your serotonin, you can create a precursor for your body’s natural melatonin as well and improving your brain’s relaxation and overall sleep quality.
We’ve already mentioned how the cherry brings more melatonin into this mix. Combined, you’ve got a great melatonin stack for a better night to fall asleep faster. All done without absolutely any synthetic melatonin – it’s a serious win for this supplement.

Performance Lab Sleep Side Effects
From the research I have done, there have been no side effects associated with Performance Lab Sleep. I put this down to the cleanliness of the formula. Being vegan, prebiotic capsules, no-additives, no-soy, no-gluten etc. etc. – there’s a huge list of what’s it’s ‘free from’ – I doubt there’s much in here that’s rubbing users the wrong way.
All the ingredients are natural and are not linked to causing any side effects.
That said, if you have any concerns about using this sleep aid – you should speak to your doctor or medical expert before using this supplement.
Did I experience any problems?
No. I experience no side effects from using Performance Lab Sleep. I take this sleep aid around 30 minutes to an hour before going to bed with a tall glass of water.
After that I go to bed, typically have a sound sleep and wake up feeling refreshed. I will update this review if I experience any negative effects from this sleep supplement.
Performance Lab Sleep Review: My Results
There are various Performance Lab Sleep reviews out there on the internet, and I thought it was my turn to throw my view out there too.
Things to know about me and my sleeping background:
- I move around a lot in my sleep (or did).
- I struggle to sleep when I’m under stress (work-related typically).
- Sleep aids have wronged me before by giving me extra grogginess in the morning (usually ones with high synthetic melatonin).
In my opinion: Performance Lab Sleep rules. I take it every night around 30 minutes to an hour before going to bed. I take two capsules each night with a tall glass of water.
By the time I get to bed, I’m already ready to put my head down and start drifting off.
The sleep usually happens shortly after that – which is a change from what I can be like without a sleep aid. Sometimes I can struggle to sleep for hours, tossing and turning until I can finally drift off. Even then I may still wake up hours before my alarm.
Performance Lab Sleep isn’t like that for me. It can help me to get away quickly and fall into a deep sleep.
I feel like I get a deep sleep with PLab Sleep by that I have next to no night disturbances, and wake up the next morning feeling totally refreshed.
With most sleep aids, I usually get hit by a wave of grogginess that makes me want to stay in bed. On some products and pills with natural melatonin I’ve actually slept in before to around 11 pm on a weekend.
In contrast, with Performance Lab Sleep I typically feel ready to go and start the day after I wake up. I feel like I have more energy to want to get out there and be productive.
I’m not saying that you’ll have the same results, all I know is that I’ve used Performance Lab Sleep, and sleep issues I’ve had in the past have reduced significantly.
This concludes my personal Performance Lab Sleep review.
Bonus Experience: This is not recommended on the Performance Lab website, but at one point while traveling to the United States I took four capsules instead of two in a bid to fight jet lag.
The results did not disappoint! Usually when I’m jet lagged, I’ll sleep for a few hours and then be up, groggy and generally unhappy. When I took four, I managed to ‘cheat’ my way into sleeping a full eight hours after I first went to bed. I didn’t experience any side effects and managed to stay asleep to beat the jet lag. However, I strongly suggest you speak to a doctor or medical professional before attempting that.

My current sleep stack:
- Performance Lab Sleep
- Performance Lab Whole-Food Multi
For my current sleep supplements, I typically buy the 3 month supply of Performance Lab Sleep for £87.00 (and that includes free shipping). I do this mainly for the extra box they throw in for free – so I get 4 months for the price of 3.
This works out around £21.75 a bottle, or £0.72 a night / daily. Which for me is an absolute bargain.
I also buy their multivitamin which you can view here. This is mainly for the general health benefits – but if you like the sound of the Nutrigenesis process that I spoke about earlier – this product is all about that. It’s exactly the same price as Performance Lab Sleep, £0.72 a day if you do the buy 3 get 1 free offer.
Sleep Tips for the Best Results
If you’re trying to improve your time with quality sleep, and falling asleep faster you may have already come across some of this advice – but I still think it’s worth mentioning these to those who may not have thought of these angles.
- Exercise regularly: If you’re not exercising for around 30 – 60 minutes a day (this can be anything from walking to weight lifting) you’re missing a trick. Studies have shown that exercising can help promote your mood and tire your body out more which can make it more susceptible to sleep.
- Eat right: For the best sleep you need to make sure you’re giving your body the additional support it needs to work efficiently without upset. If you’re eating junk food, your body will struggle to process it, and may use it inefficiently resulting in poor energy and a bad night’s sleep.
- Avoid blue light when in bed: After going to bed, it can be tempting to use your phone before drifting off. However, the blue light from the screen may trigger a daytime reaction in your brain which may keep you up for longer.
I can’t stress enough how much that last one helps when it comes to mustering up better quality sleep production. You can fight it a little with a blue-light filter on your phone – but your best results are by not using it at all. Certainly a more safe alternative.
Performance Lab Sleep Summary
As you can see, from both a research point of view, and from my personal experience – Performance Lab Sleep seems to be an effective natural option.
For me personally, it’s the best sleep supplement I’ve used. It’s good for helping me to achieve that deep sleep that stops me waking up in the middle of the night. I fall asleep, I stay asleep and I definitely prefer using the tart cherry over synthetic melatonin which I found in other sleep supplements.
The tart cherry still gives me that natural supply of the hormone – as well as the magnesium and L-Tryptophan also helping to improve my natural production of it, which all culminates in me having a better night’s sleep and no grogginess when I wake up in the morning.
